Follow these easy tricks! Don’t let the sun bring your hair down.
Throughout the year we emphasize keeping our hair healthy and shiny by using many different products and remedies. By the time summer rolls around, our go-to tricks aren’t as reliable due to the dryer weather. The outer layer of what is considered healthy hair, contains a natural oil to keep it moist and shiny. When this layer is damaged, your hair can end up looking dull, unhealthy and dry. Some factors to keep in mind that contribute to dull hair are your use of harsh hair care products (be careful ladies!), bad quality conditioner, over exposure to sun (yes!), use of hair color products (bleach), age, stress, swimming pools and use of heating tools. In the warmer and more humid months, it’s essential to try and limit your use of hot hair tools. The combination of the hot tools and the sun will leave your hair brittle, dull and lifeless. Try to embrace the convenience of the warmer summer months, especially when vacationing in warmer climates. Allow your hair to air dry, which will provide natural beach waves which are trendy, sexy and feminine!
Most of us are known to be drawn to conditioners, shampoos and shine serums that we see in advertisements and products that are recommended by our stylists. It’s important to realize that over a period of time, these products could potentially cause even more damage to your hair (chemicals!). In this blog we will discuss some very simple and natural remedies to make hair smooth and shiny. You will learn techniques that will ensure you don’t damage your hair this summer. Happy reading gals!
1. Coconut Oil
For all you shiny hair ambassadors, it is essential to provide nourishment by applying coconut oil to your hair on an ongoing basis. Coconut oil is one of the best options and natural remedies out there. It helps to restore the moisture to dry and damaged hair, in turn making it shiny and healthy.
TIP: Apply warm coconut oil to your hair, from your root to the ends. Massage and then wrap your hair in a shower cap for at least 30 minutes. After, rinse your hair with water and then shampoo and condition.
TIP: Another option is to make a coconut oil hair spray with water. You can apply this throughout the day to add nourishment and a natural shine to your hair. Keep it in your purse or beach bag for easy access and convenience on those days you are on the go.
Avocado contains incredible nutrients that will naturally deeply moisturize, nourish and restore shine to your hair. Avocado has been to proven to work very well for dry and damaged hair, bringing back to life from any dullness. Below are a two recommendations for hair masks to try at home.
TIP: Mix one mashed ripe avocado with two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil. Apply this mixture on damp hair, from the roots to the ends. Cover with a shower cap for 30 minutes. Finally, rinse and shampoo your hair as usual.
TIP: You can also mash one ripe avocado and one ripe banana together. Mix in one-half tablespoon of almond oil. Massage this paste onto your scalp and spread it all over your hair. Cover your head with a shower cap for 30 minutes or more. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and then shampoo your hair.
3. Don't Rinse Out All of the Conditioner
Next time you’re washing your hair, try not to rinse out all your conditioner completely. Rinse your hair until it still feels like there is still a bit of conditioner there, then pour cold water over your head with the shower head. Don’t rinse our completely or run your fingers through it (the conditioner will come out). Once showered, comb your hair gently, blow or air dry and then style to your preference. Leave-in conditioners are also a great alternative. Spray it in your hair after you’ve shampooed, and leave it in until the next time you wash your hair.
TIP: Some leave-in conditioners can provide styling in addition to adding hydration. These products are known to help you with frizz-control. It’s important to make sure your hair isn’t weighed-down and greasy though after application, just a pea sized amount can do wonders.
4. Davines Oi Oil Absolute Beautifying Potion
This stuff is liquid magic! All you need is a few drops to rub on the ends of your hair. The beauty and advantage of this life changing product is that it can be used on wet or dry hair. I tend to apply it mid hair dry to add that extra boost of shine and smoothness as I blow dry. This product is available at select salons and ranges between $28-50 (depending on size format).
5. Remember to Turn Down the Heat
Most of us gals have a daily hair styling routine, whether it be prepping for work daily or a big night out on the town. Part of your styling routine may be to blow dry, curl, straighten or color your hair. Please consider the harm you may be causing to the health of your hair before overdoing it. The more you process your locks, whether it be to change your color or style the look of your hair, the more damage you would potentially cause. This includes the natural shine and overall softness to your hair. Take a few steps back on your regular routine (I know it sounds daunting) and try using styling tools every other day (rather than daily). Perhaps consider going to the salon for color treatments every three months (instead of every six to eight weeks). Your hair will love you for, look healthy and in return be easier to maintain as a result.
