In the world we live in today, hair extensions have evolved and are now more focused on looking and feeling more natural. Techniques have been customized to cater to each individual’s needs whether it be their preference for color, style or installation method.   Our clients always ask us about the difference in extension method types and which one is the best.  Truth is that there is no “best” method, there is the “right” method for you.
The beauty and convenience of having hair extensions, is that they simply add length to your hair by using natural hair alternatives – a true life saver for many! Magic! They’re often desired mainly to add volume, length and even color contrast. By practicing often, you may be able to teach yourself how to apply them at home, however it is often recommended to see a stylist as some techniques are more complex than others.

INSTALLATION

Choosing hair extensions and the right type of installation for your hair can be challenging when you first start out! This is mainly because there are so many different options available. When selecting the method that works best for you, it’s important to consider your hair type, lifestyle, and the type of budget you’re working with. Keep in mind that some extensions are set out to last months while others just a few days and some are much more expensive than others. Hair extensions can be glued, taped, bonded, and woven. If you’re only seeking a temporary solution, clip-ins can add significant volume and length and may be the perfect choice for you. Each type of extension installation has pros and cons so it’s highly recommended to do your research in advance. Reach out and connect with your hair stylist to discover what the best route is for you and your hair. Everyone’s hair is different so some methods will work better from others.
When it comes to Natural Human hair, it is best to look for 100% Remi human hair. Designed and engineered by BOHYME, Remi refers to the cuticle direction of the hair, every strand is aligned in the same direction from root to tip. This is important because this helps prevent tangling and knotting in your extensions and ultimately creates a more natural look to wear every day.

ADHESIVE TAPE-IN EXTENSIONS

Tape-in extensions are wefts of hair with an adhesive tape strip placed at the root of your hair. They are designed to be applied fast and removed just as easily. The extensions are sandwiched between the natural hair and results are seamless. Tape-ins are a great option for the busy individual who is on the go often, as they are quite easy to maintain and style. They are known as the safest method of hair extensions available, as the weight of the panel is spread out over a larger area, causing no damage to your hair. Tape-in extensions are proven to work very well with blonde colored hair because wefts are easier to blend in.

CLIP-INs

Clip-in extensions are an efficient and great temporary alternative to extend your look. They are designed and meant to wear as a short-term solution that can be applied and removed in minutes. Clip-in extensions have tiny combs that attach to the root of the hair so they can be easy to apply without the assistance of a stylist. They are a preferred choice for individuals who wish to add and remove extensions out daily for special events and occasions.

Maintenance tip: Wash hair extensions as little as possible and apply a deep conditioner if the hair becomes dry or dull. Use a wide tooth comb to comb extensions.

SEW-IN EXTENSIONS

Sew-in extensions are well known to most as a weave. Sew-in or braided extensions are a perfect match for coarse, curly or thick hair. The idea is that the natural hair is braided to create a base for the extensions, then the wefts are sewn into the braids using a needle and thread to add the length. They typically last up to three months and can take many hours to install.

BONDED EXTENSIONS

Bonded extensions are commonly referred to as fusion hair extensions, i-tips, v-tips or u-tips. Fusion hair extensions are strands of hair that are pre-bonded at the root with various type of adhesives. Some will use keratin, glue, or petroleum based adhesives. These can last up to five months and require minimal maintenance.

MICRO LINK

This method is when small sections of your hair are looped through cylinders and then clamped down using pliers. Some cylinders have threads on the interior to prevent slippage. As the extensions are designed to be individual strands, the hair tends to move a little more naturally than other methods. This application is great as it uses no heat or glue and can last up six months. However, this is one of the timeliest methods with an average installation time of 4 hours. Hair is reusable and any extensions that may have slid down or off can be treated in about an hour by your stylist.  This method has proven to not be suitable for thin, fine hair as the bonds can be visible through the hair.

PRO-TIPS

Also known as I-tips or U-Tips, are individual extensions which resemble the tip of a shoe lace. Each hair will be secured with micro rings or cylinders to strands of hair. This allows stylists to more precisely add length to specific areas. Microbeads are clamped to securely hold each hair extension strand in place. That means your hair can be long and full without the worry of slippage. This amazing method has absolutely no chemicals, no glue, and no heat. A stylist is definitely required for this type of hair extension installation and takes up to 2 hours to install. They may be reused up to 3 times and last up to 3-6 months depending on care and maintenance.

It's great to know that you have several hair extension options and how some of them use glue to lengthen your hair. My friend is about to have a client meeting within the year and she wants to make sure that she can sport a ponytail by then. I should let her know about hair extensions so she can visit a salon and try it out!
